Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll (Cinevee style)

Sex, Language, Violence, Drugs & Alcohol, Nudity. These are the five dimensions of the Cinevee content rating system. There are many reasons to use a system other than the MPAA — even after the revamp campaign “Check the Box”.

The Dove Foundation and Common Sense Media are popular alternatives that illustrate this fact. At Cinevee, we let the filmmaker rate their own films because:

  1. The cost of an MPAA review & licensing for indie filmmakers is prohibitive.
  2. The MPAA ratings system isn’t very informative.
  3. The MPAA is subjective.

Letting filmmakers rate their own films also means that we are not imposing our worldview of what acceptable content is. One person’s ‘mild’ level of language, for example, is another person’s upper limit. The content rating is from the filmmaker’s perspective and it’s their job to tell you what kind of content is in their film.

The fun part about making this decision is in the implementation. Andrew Olsen (@Olson87) designed some great new icons to visually represent the Cinevee rating system.

  • Sex

  • Drugs & Alcohol

  • Violence

  • Language

  • Nudity

I found a great little app by IcoMoon to create web-safe fonts from SVGs. They look great and because the icon is a font, changing the color based on the severity of the rating category is a simple CSS definition.
